When the appendix becomes infected, surgery to remove it is performed. Appendicitis is the medical term for this condition. An emergency appendectomy is a common procedure.

The appendix is a small pouch that connects the large intestine to the stomach. It's located in the lower right corner of your stomach. If you have appendicitis, you should have your appendix removed as soon as possible. Your appendix may explode if it is not addressed. This is a life-threatening situation.

Appendectomy via laparoscopic surgery. This is a less invasive procedure. That is, it is performed without the use of a major incision. Instead, one to three little cuts are made. A laparoscope, a long, thin tube, is inserted into one of the incisions.

It has a small video camera as well as surgical equipment. To see into your abdomen and direct the tools, the surgeon uses a TV display. One of the incisions is used to remove the appendix.
