General anesthesia is used for laparoscopic hernia repair, which necessitates the use of a breathing tube.
In the lower abdomen, three half-inch or smaller incisions are made. A camera called a laparoscope is introduced into the abdomen to visualize the hernia defect on a monitor during laparoscopic hernia repair.
The surgeon's movements are guided by the image on the monitor. The hernia sac is excised from the abdominal wall defect, and the defect is subsequently covered with a prosthetic mesh. During this procedure, surgeons take care not to injure the nerves near the hernia.
